An encompassing theory of the development of the human mind must consider the ways in which it adapts to, and shapes, social and ecological contexts, as well as the universal foundations that enable this reciprocal interaction. This requires a combination of developmental, cross-cultural and comparative studies, providing an integrative account of uniquely human cultural diversity and its universal developmental roots. I will aim to describe and discuss such a research program. In the department of Comparative Cultural Psychology we pursue two lines of inquiry: (1) Studying developmental patterns of psychological traits in human and non-human great apes. (2) Cross-cultural comparisons of psychological traits and their developmental patterns in both human and non-human great apes.

Professor Dr. Daniel Haun is Director of the Department of Cultural Psychology at the Max Planck Institute of Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. He is also Director of the Leipzig Research Center for Early Child Development and Honorary Professor for Comparative Cultural Psychology at Leipzig University. Daniel studies how human cognitive development is adapted to cultural diversity and how it contributes to it, which requires a combination of developmental, cross-cultural and comparative studies, providing an integrative account of uniquely human cultural diversity and its universal cognitive roots.
