Japan Studies

The ANU Japan Studies Program is among the most popular in the southern hemisphere. History, literary and popular culture, and language and society constitute the main fields of scholarly inquiry, but their interests extend across a wide range of disciplines and methodologies.

In today’s globalised world and the Asian Century, Japan is one of Australia’s key trading partners, and Japan-based employers often actively recruit ANU graduates with detailed knowledge of and experience in Japan.

Our programs and courses provide students with a practical, time-appropriate and hands-on nuanced understanding of the historical, political, artistic, cultural and social phenomena that have shaped the evolution of Japan. Armed with this understanding, students will be able to engage meaningfully with the culture, society and people of Japan.
